The directory is strong at finding broad public-record leads and weak at proving today’s customer experience. All 28,326 source records include a source URL; 27,854, or 98.3%, have a usable non-placeholder coordinate and can enter distance search. Meanwhile, 94.9% have a street address and 79.5% have a phone number—but only 8.3% include a facility website, and 95.5% have no affirmative “open” status. Use the data to build a call list, not to skip the call.
Why analyze the directory instead of just publishing a big number?
“28,000+ records” sounds useful, but the count alone does not tell you whether those records describe public drop-off sites, private processors, government facilities, old program entries, or places that accept your exact material. A large directory can create false confidence if its limitations stay hidden.
For this report, we read all 55 state and U.S.-territory files used by the WasteWayfinder browser search. We independently added the record counts, compared them with the public manifest, checked required names, coordinate ranges, and placeholder coordinates, counted contact fields, reviewed operating-status labels, grouped facility types, and counted the material-category flags used by the search.
The result is not a claim that we called 28,326 facilities. We did not. This is an analysis of the release itself: what information is present, what is absent, and how those gaps should change the way a person uses a search result.
The release reconciles—but internal consistency is only step one
The 55 files contain exactly 28,326 source records, matching the manifest. Every state or territory listed in the manifest has a corresponding file, and every individual file count matches its listed total. We found no blank facility names and no coordinates outside numeric latitude and longitude bounds. We did find 472 records at 0,0—a common placeholder, not a credible facility location—and excluded them from distance search rather than quietly ranking them.

This distinction matters. Data integrity asks, “Is the file complete enough for the software to read as intended?” Search eligibility asks, “Does this record have a location the distance calculation can responsibly use?” Facility verification asks, “Can this person take this item to this place under today’s rules?” The first two questions can be checked across thousands of records. The third usually requires a current official page or a conversation with the operator.
Most records have an address or phone; few have a facility website
Contact coverage is mixed. The address rate is high, and roughly four in five records include a phone number. Direct facility websites are uncommon. Every record carries a public source URL, but a dataset or agency source is not necessarily the facility’s own customer-information page.

The website gap is the most important practical weakness we found. A source URL may open an ArcGIS service, an agency dataset, or a program record that proves the facility entered a public system. It may not answer whether a resident can arrive with a mattress on Saturday.
That is why WasteWayfinder displays “Dataset source” and “Facility website” as separate actions when both exist. Treating them as interchangeable would hide a meaningful difference in evidence.
One destination can produce more than one source record
Applying the finder’s own grouping rules to all 27,854 mappable rows produced 26,256 potential display groups. In that full-release comparison, 1,598 extra rows folded into 1,553 repeated groups; the largest group contained five rows. That does not mean 1,598 facilities are fake. One property can enter more than one public program, carry slightly different address wording, or be classified for more than one operation.
The finder groups a normalized street address with a broad facility-type family. When an address is unavailable, it falls back to normalized name, city, and type. It keeps the row with stronger contact and classification fields. This reduces repeated cards without pretending that two operations at the same property are automatically the same. Because grouping is a display choice rather than a merger of the source files, the public release count remains 28,326.
Operating status is usually unknown
Only 1,265 records—about 4.5%—carry an “Open” value in the current files. The other 27,061, or 95.5%, are marked “Unknown.” Unknown does not mean closed. It means this release does not supply a status strong enough for WasteWayfinder to claim the location is operating.
A tempting design choice would be to hide “Unknown” and show every result as a normal business listing. That would make the directory feel smoother, but it would also erase the most important warning in the data. Instead, the result card says “Operating status: Verify” unless the dataset explicitly contains an open value.
An operating facility can be private, restricted to commercial accounts, outside your service area, unable to accept a particular material, or closed to drop-offs at the time you plan to arrive.
The directory is not a balanced sample of every disposal option
The ten largest facility types account for most of the release. Composting facilities are the single largest group, followed by transfer stations, metals recyclers, municipal solid-waste landfills, construction-and-demolition recovery facilities, electronics recyclers, general recovery facilities, and anaerobic-digestion sites.

This mix explains why the finder is more naturally informative for green waste, construction material, metals, and broad landfill or transfer research than for a specialized reuse question. Donation centers, retailer take-back programs, scheduled household events, municipal curbside services, and small independent recyclers are not represented evenly by national facility datasets.
A directory result is therefore one route among several. The material guides begin with reuse, retailer take-back, hauler pickup, stewardship programs, or community collection where those routes are more appropriate than driving directly to a disposal facility.
Material flags overlap, and they describe potential relevance
The search maps facility classifications to eleven broad material groups. A record can belong to more than one group, so the percentages below deliberately add to more than 100%. They are not a measurement of how much material each facility accepts.

Consider the “mattress or bulky waste” category. A landfill or transfer station may be a plausible bulky-waste lead, but that classification alone does not prove it accepts mattresses, serves the public, or charges the same rate as ordinary trash. The material flag earns the record a place on a research list; it does not earn a confirmation badge.
The low paper, glass, and plastics counts do not mean those materials lack recycling routes. Curbside programs, redemption centers, commercial collection, retailer programs, and local directories may be better sources than this facility release. A good search product should say when its data model is not the whole market.
Geographic record counts reflect source coverage, not need
California has the largest file with 2,128 records, followed by New York with 2,037, Texas with 1,497, Ohio with 1,353, Wisconsin with 1,267, Michigan with 1,012, Massachusetts with 986, and Illinois with 973. At the other end, several territories have only a handful of records.
It would be wrong to turn those totals into a “best recycling states” ranking. The count is influenced by population, land area, agency reporting, program participation, facility definitions, source years, and how duplicate records were handled before this release. It is a coverage map of the inputs, not a performance score.
The finder removes the 0,0 placeholder records, searches the selected state and bordering states, ranks by straight-line distance, and usually starts with a 100-mile radius. It can expand to 250 miles when too few matches exist. In a sparse region, it may show a distant lead because that is more honest than pretending the data contains a nearby option. It also explains why a local government or hauler search should follow when the national index is quiet.
The source-period notes are a warning, not decoration
Most records carry the note “RIMOM v2; underlying sources vary and are not real-time.” Other records say their sources range from 2011–2021, with most from 2018–2021, or that state files were current as of September 2024. The WasteWayfinder files were assembled in July 2026, but assembling an older source into a newer release does not make the underlying observation new.
This is a common directory problem: file date and fact date are different. A visitor deserves both. Where the release cannot identify a current operating fact, the site preserves the source-period note and asks for verification.
A practical way to use the directory without wasting a trip
- Classify the item before searching. Note material, condition, quantity, dimensions, contamination, and whether it came from a home or business.
- Check the material guide. A retailer, hauler, donation route, stewardship program, or household hazardous-waste event may fit better than a landfill search.
- Build a short lead list. Use distance and facility type to select two or three plausible results. Do not load the vehicle yet.
- Open the facility page when available. Look for current accepted materials, public hours, account restrictions, appointment rules, and load preparation.
- Call with a complete question. Name the exact material and quantity, your home or business origin, your city or ZIP code, vehicle type, and intended arrival day.
- Ask for the total charge. Include minimums, per-item fees, environmental fees, taxes, residency discounts, contamination charges, and payment methods.
- Document the answer. Save the representative’s name when offered, call date, quoted rule, and source link. Recheck if the trip date changes.

Why only four records have a tied price source
The current pricing file contains four entries, all tied to Riverside County’s official schedule effective July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2027. That is a tiny share of the directory, and it is intentionally tiny. Pricing becomes misleading quickly when a number is copied away from its material class, minimum charge, weight unit, residency rule, or effective date.
WasteWayfinder could fill empty price boxes with national averages, but an average does not tell a reader what the scale house will charge. The safer default is “Not published in our source,” followed by a call-ahead prompt. Absence is a data fact; an invented estimate is not.
What this analysis still cannot tell us
We did not determine how many records represent public drop-off access, how many facilities are currently operating, how many accept each exact item, or how many phone numbers still reach the operator. We also did not measure driving time, service quality, accessibility, illegal dumping risk, or whether a facility follows best practices.
Those questions need different evidence: current operator pages, calls, government permits, site visits, user corrections, and recurring local review. The five Southern California guides begin that deeper source-check layer, but they are not a substitute for nationwide field verification.
No page in this release is labeled as a firsthand facility inspection. That limitation stays visible because trust is not created by writing in the first person; it is created by saying what was actually done.
The useful conclusion is a better decision, not a bigger database
The analysis supports a narrow conclusion: the 28,326-record source release reconciles, its 27,854 mappable records are broad enough to generate plausible research leads, and its contact coverage is strongest for facility types well represented in public data. It is not current or detailed enough to promise that a particular place will take a particular load.
That may sound less impressive than a “verified nationwide directory.” It is also more useful. A reader who understands the gap between a dataset match and an accepted load knows exactly what to do next: check the route, call before loading, and keep a second option.
