Do not pour paint into a drain, gutter, soil, or regular trash container. Keep it in the original container and use PaintCare or Riverside County’s household hazardous waste guidance to find the correct program.
Identify the product first
“Paint” can mean latex wall paint, oil-based coating, primer, stain, varnish, aerosol coating, two-part product, solvent, roof coating, or industrial material. Programs do not accept every category, so read the label and describe the product accurately.
- Use or share good paint. Save labeled paint for touch-ups or offer usable material only where local rules and the recipient allow it.
- Check PaintCare. The California program maintains current product rules and participating drop-off locations for covered architectural coatings.
- Check the county HHW program. Use it for eligible household products not handled through a convenient stewardship location.
- Ask about business waste. Contractor and commercial quantities may follow different appointment, fee, and documentation rules.
Transport paint safely
- Keep every product in a labeled container.
- Tighten lids and place containers upright in a box.
- Use absorbent material around leaking containers.
- Keep products away from passengers and heat.
Combining paint, cleaners, pool chemicals, solvents, pesticides, or unknown liquids can create heat, pressure, toxic gas, or a product the collection program cannot safely identify.
Before visiting a drop-off site
- Confirm the exact location participates in the program.
- Check days, hours, quantity limits, and container-size limits.
- Ask whether appointments or proof of residency are required.
- Confirm whether the program accepts households only.
- Follow staff instructions and remain with the material until directed.
