Ask a C&D recycler whether it accepts clean gypsum separately and whether painted, wallpapered, wet, moldy, or demolition drywall is excluded. Keep joint-compound buckets, metal corner bead, insulation, tile, and trash out of a clean gypsum load.

Prepare it before you load
- Identify whether material is new construction scrap or demolition debris.
- Remove screws, corner bead, tile, wood, insulation, and packaging where practical.
- Keep recyclable gypsum dry and off the ground.
- Use dust controls and follow renovation safety requirements.
Gypsum recycling depends on a clean stream
The paper facing and gypsum core can sometimes be processed, but dirt, insulation, tile adhesive, and mixed trash reduce recovery options. Cement board and plaster are not automatically the same as drywall. Ask the processor which boards and coatings it takes rather than relying on appearance.
Demolition dust can contain more than gypsum. Wall textures, joint compounds, lead paint, and concealed mold may require assessment and controlled work. Do not sweep fine dust into the street or wash it into a storm drain. Bag or containerize residual dust according to the destination's rules.
