For a working appliance, compare resale or donation with retailer and utility take-back. For refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, and dehumidifiers, use a program that can recover refrigerant before metal recycling or disposal.
Choose the route by condition
| What you have | Best first call |
|---|---|
| Replacement delivery | Compare the retailer's haul-away fee and preparation rules. |
| Working and clean | Ask a reuse organization about age, condition, and pickup area. |
| Refrigerant appliance | Confirm refrigerant recovery and any certificate or fee. |
| Small appliance | Check e-waste or scrap-metal rules; components can change the category. |
Prepare it before you load
- Disconnect power, water, gas, and venting safely.
- Remove food and clean the appliance without damaging lines.
- Tape or secure doors for transport, while preventing child entrapment during storage.
- Use enough people and proper moving equipment for the weight.
The contents matter as much as the metal
A refrigerator is not just scrap steel. Refrigerant and compressor oil require proper recovery, and some older equipment may contain additional regulated components. Do not cut refrigerant lines or remove a compressor to qualify for a lower scrap rate. Ask who performs recovery and what documentation the receiving site needs.
Gas appliances should be disconnected by a qualified person when required. Water heaters and washing machines may retain water; dryers can contain lint and sharp sheet metal. A hauler may require doors removed, but removing doors too early can also create sharp edges. Follow the destination's preparation instructions.

Common mistakes
- Cutting refrigerant lines
- Moving a gas appliance while still connected
- Promising a donation before checking condition standards
- Leaving an appliance accessible to children
Questions to ask before the trip
- Do you accept this appliance type and condition?
- Who recovers the refrigerant?
- Must doors, shelves, or cords be removed?
- Does the quoted price include stairs and pickup?
Do not transport a leaking, reacting, smoking, unstable, or unknown hazardous item based only on a web guide. Move away from immediate danger and contact local emergency or hazardous-waste staff.
